The essential checklist to secure your home this Spring

The essential checklist to secure your home this Spring

The mornings are getting brighter by the day, birds are chirping, and evenings are lasting longer. This can only mean one thing, Spring is near! As the clocks go forward on March 29th, the new season prompts a change in many aspects of everyday living and encourages homeowners to have the all-important “spring clean”.

It’s finally time to let fresh air in your home, dust off the shelf and enjoy the great outdoors after being cooped up inside during winter. Here’s a list of things to check to ensure your property is secure this Spring:

Cut back overgrown bushes and hedges: It won’t be long before the gardens bursts into life once more. If you have foliage that wasn’t cut back before the Autumn it’ll quickly grow soon, providing would-be thieves with potential hiding places.

Check locks on windows and doors: After such a damp winter, check all the window and door locks for stiffness. A rusted lock can become brittle and unsafe, make sure you have some WD40 to clean and lubricate all locks this spring.

Replace damaged fences and panels: After such heavy storms this winter, make sure you check your fence panels are all intact and secure. A missing panel or wobbly fence provides access to a potential thief.

Install a smart home security system: Blink’s XT2 wireless, weatherproof night-vision outdoor cameras can be placed anywhere on the property. Making it perfect for monitoring the kids playing in the garden, protecting parked vehicles and exterior areas. The XT2 features two-way audio meaning you can talk through the camera to both welcome guests and warn off any unwelcomed visitors.

Video Security Protection notices: If you have or want to install a video security system at home (or even if you don’t) display your security service on the outside of your house – it’s a great way to deter opportunistic thieves. It also helps inform welcome visitors that video surveillance is in use.

Blink cameras help police successfully catch a burglar in the act

Blink cameras help police successfully catch a burglar in the act

North Yorkshire Police successfully identified, arrested and convicted an intruder caught stealing from the home of an unsuspecting 79-year-old man, thanks to Blink camera footage and an appeal on social media.

Family members of the homeowner had installed home security systems around the house for their relative’s safety after he was victim to four burglaries earlier that same year. This proved extremely beneficial in the early hours of September 16th, when an unwelcomed guest triggered Blink’s motion detection camera and the infrared night vision recorded the disguised man while he stole from the house. After noticing the security system, he removed two cameras from the house in the hope that this would destroy any proof of his invasion, but unbeknownst to this criminal, Blink camera clips are instantly sent to the smartphone connected to the camera – in this case, a relative of the homeowner - and stored on a secure cloud storage.

A North Yorkshire Police Officer working on the case, Detective Constable Hannah McPeake, shared her disapproval of the calculated crime committed by Karl Lambert and revealed the evidence that helped identify and convict the prolific burglar.

“This was a spineless crime committed on a 79-year-old man who was targeted for his vulnerability. Thankfully, Lambert was snared by our social media appeal after members of the public recognised him as the person captured on CCTV committing the burglary. He also left behind a brown paper bag which linked him to the crime.”

This is the Blink camera footage that helped investigators identify the man:

Home security systems such as the Blink XT2 can offer peace of mind to family members, knowing that you can have a watchful eye over your loved ones in case they need you.

How to protect your home from potential burglars

How to protect your home from potential burglars

Packed and ready to go for your long-awaited getaway? Finally, some much-needed downtime, but the thought of leaving your home unattended may play on your mind. John Lewis Home Insurance brought together a panel of former burglars to gain advice on what signs or clues entice them into a property. Below are some simple tips holidaymakers can follow to keep these tell-tale signs at bay.

Keep your letterbox clutter-free

Letters and leaflets overflowing through the letterbox could go unnoticed to the innocent eye but for a thief, this could be an indication that the occupants of the house are away. Former offenders advised that homeowners should ask a trusted friend or neighbour to regularly empty the letterbox whilst they’re away. In addition, people should avoid ordering any packages to be delivered to the home during this time as any packages unattended could also be a sign that the homeowners are absent.

Create an illusion

Closed curtains and lights off for a prolonged time show thieves that there’s no activity in the home and therefore seize the opportunity. Former offenders recommended using timer switches to give the impression that people are active and living in the house.

Install smart home security

The offenders also suggested installing home security cameras with motion detection to deter criminals. If someone does manage to break-in, you'll know straight away so you can act before it's too late. Even better, if you install outdoor cameras too, you'll be able to see potential burglars before they even manage to get in. Putting signs or stickers on your windows visible outside your property letting people know that you've got a camera system set up will also act as a deterrent to opportunist criminals.
